EMDR Research News September 2014

This month there are 13 new articles directly related to EMDR therapy. Four of these articles are available with open access links for immediate download.

There is a randomized controlled study of EMDR therapy for treating PTSD in those with chemical dependency. There is a wonderful first report from The European Depression EMDR Network study [EDEN] with a non-randomized exploratory study of EMDR therapy as an adjunct for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for those with major depressive disorder.

There are two meta-analyses: the first analyzed studies of EMDR therapy for adults with PTSD, the other examined EMDR therapy for child victims of natural and manmade disasters.

There are two new review articles: one reviews reports of EMDR therapy for traumatized refugees, the other reviews EMDR therapy for victims of natural disasters. There also is a quality of care article examining subjective patient reports of responses to therapy for PTSD.

There are three neurological reports. One is an fMRI study of healthy subjects responses of monaural versus bilateral auditory stimulation. A second examines EEG responses in a case series of subjects with PTSD. The third is an EEG study of the inter hemispheric coherence hypothesis of EMDR therapy that reports on the effects of bilateral eye movements on positive memories in non-clinical subjects.

There are three clinical case reports. One from Korea examines two cases of patients with bipolar disorder treated for PTSD with EMDR therapy. A second reports on a single case of nightmares treatment with EMDR therapy. The third explores the use of compassion focused interweaves in EMDR therapy.

EMDR Research News July 2014

This month there are eight new articles directly related to EMDR therapy.

There are three case reports for: grief, specific phobia and for the treatment of sexual offenders trauma experiences.

There are four randomized controlled trials (RCT). Two are pilot studies: EMDR for trauma experiences in Bipolar I and II patients; and there is a variation on the Feeling State Protocol for tobacco smoking relapse. There is a PTSD vs health control group exploring EMDR therapy effects on PTSD regarding mood, anxiety, subjective, and objective sleep (evaluated by polysomnographic recording). There is a much needed RCT studying treatment of PTSD in children comparing trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy versus EMDR therapy which found that both TF-CBT and EMDR are effective and efficient in reducing PTSD symptoms in children.

Finally, there is 25th anniversary review article by Francine Shapiro that appeared in the APA Division 56 (Trauma Psychology) Newsletter.

The
video of the month is a recently released 2009 video from the Netherlands of Joany Spierings in conversation with Francine Shapiro at the 10th annual EMDR Europe Conference.

EMDR Research News May 2014

This month I bring you five new articles directly related to EMDR therapy and two bonus articles addressing the neurobiology of PTSD.

Among the five EMDR therapy articles, there are two
case reports. These examine EMDR therapy for mild dementia and for complex regional pain syndrome. There is a research report from the Netherlands showing that the eye movements used in EMDR therapy produce enduring changes in memory but only when there is sufficient duration of the eye movements. There is a Clinical Q & A article on a new metaphor for helping clients understand their issues and recognize their gains in the EMDR approach to therapy. Finally, there is a clinical overview of how to apply EMDR therapy to cases of borderline personality disorder from my Spanish co-authors, Dolores Mosquera and Anabel Gonzalez and myself.

In addition you will find a summary of a French article on magneto-encephalographic (MEG) brain recordings during traumatic memory recall in women with post-traumatic stress disorder which is dedicated to the memory of our colleague David Servan-Schreiber who died in 2011. Finally, there is full text link to an in-depth article on a theoretical model of the neurobiology of the hyperarousal subtype of PTSD.

In the
books section you will find the just released book on EMDR Therapy from Ulrich F. Lanius PhD, Sandra L. Paulsen PhD, and Frank M. Corrigan MD - Neurobiology and Treatment of Traumatic Dissociation: Towards an Embodied Self and a preview of the forthcoming EMDR Toolbox: Theory and Treatment of Complex PTSD and Dissociation from Jim Knipe, Ph.D.

EMDR Research News April 2014

Due to a busy travel schedule there was no time for a March research listing this year. As of early April there are seven new journal articles since our February update on EMDR therapy, two recently released books for EMDR trained clinicians, and a wonderful video about a simple (and research supported) way to increase personal presence.

Among the seven articles, there are three
case reports. These examine EMDR therapy for trauma with mild intellectual disabilities, for treating complex trauma, and for adult survivors of sexual abuse.

There are two
research articles: the first a potentially highly significant randomized controlled trial with combat veterans from the Iraq war comparing CBT and EMDR; the other a follow-up report on outreach efforts after the 2005 bombings in London that included some EMDR treatment.

There are two
review articles: the first is a major review article by Francine Shapiro in The Permanente Journal addressing applications of EMDR in medicine; the other reviews treatment approaches for PTSD in Germany.

The
video of the month features an inspirational Ted Talk with social psychologist Amy Cuddy on a simple way to increase personal presence.

In the
books section I reprise my earlier reviews of Integrative Team Treatment for Attachment Trauma in Children and Integrative Parenting by Debra Wesselmann, Cathy Schweitzer and Stefanie Armstrong of the Omaha based Attachment and Trauma Center of Nebraska as these books are now available for purchase.
